SpaceX consistently posts more RF engineering openings than almost any other company in the industry, largely driven by the scale of the Starlink constellation and the communications requirements of Starship. If you're an RF engineer weighing an offer or thinking about applying, here's an honest look at what the roles involve and what to expect.
Where the RF work actually is
The bulk of RF hiring at SpaceX sits inside two programs. Starlink drives enormous demand for phased array antenna engineers, RF systems engineers working on user terminals and satellite payloads, and RFIC designers working on the custom silicon that makes the user terminal phased arrays economically viable at scale. Starship and launch vehicle comms is a smaller but growing group working on telemetry, command and control links, and the RF systems that need to survive the thermal and vibration environment of an actual launch and reentry.
The Starlink phased array work is genuinely cutting-edge. SpaceX has driven down the cost of phased array user terminals dramatically compared to what the industry considered possible a few years ago, and that required real innovation in both the RF hardware and the digital beamforming architecture. If you want to work on phased array systems at a scale and cost point that doesn't exist anywhere else in the industry, this is one of very few places to do it.
The pace is not exaggerated
Every account from engineers who've worked there, on the record and off, says the same thing: the pace is real, not marketing. Long hours are common, especially around launch campaigns or hardware milestones. The company operates with a bias toward speed and iteration that's closer to a hardware startup than a traditional aerospace company, even though SpaceX is well past startup size at this point.
This isn't universally a downside — a lot of engineers who go to SpaceX specifically want that pace and find traditional aerospace timelines frustratingly slow by comparison. But if you're coming from a company with a 40-hour week culture and value work-life balance highly, know that SpaceX's culture is a genuine departure, not just a stereotype.
Clearance requirements
Unlike most of the defense-focused companies on this site, a lot of SpaceX's RF work — particularly Starlink — doesn't require a security clearance, since it's a commercial program. Some roles tied to national security payloads or government contracts (they do have DoD and intelligence community work) do require clearance, but the bar for entry on the commercial side is lower than at a traditional defense prime. This makes SpaceX one of the more accessible entry points into serious phased array and satellite RF work if you don't hold a clearance and don't want to wait on sponsorship.
Compensation
SpaceX compensation is a mix of base salary and equity, and the equity component has historically been meaningful given the company's valuation trajectory, though it's illiquid until a liquidity event and shouldn't be counted the same as cash. Based on public data and postings:
Entry-level RF/antenna engineers (0–3 years): roughly $110,000–$145,000 base, plus equity
Mid-level (3–8 years): roughly $145,000–$185,000 base, plus equity
Senior RF/phased array engineers: $185,000–$240,000+ base, plus equity that can be substantial depending on level and tenure
Base salaries at SpaceX tend to run slightly below what you'd see at a defense prime for equivalent experience, with the equity intended to make up the difference. Whether that tradeoff works in your favor depends heavily on your risk tolerance and how long you plan to stay.
What the interview process looks like
Expect a technical screen that goes deep on fundamentals fast — SpaceX interviewers have a reputation for probing until they find the edge of your actual understanding, rather than accepting a textbook answer at face value. For phased array roles specifically, expect detailed questions on beamforming, mutual coupling, and calibration approaches. For RFIC-adjacent roles, expect real circuit-level questions.
There's also typically a round focused on how you handle ambiguity and fast iteration — a classic SpaceX interview question style is presenting a half-defined problem and watching how you structure your approach, rather than asking for a single correct textbook answer.
Who does well there
Engineers who thrive at SpaceX tend to want ownership over hard problems and are comfortable with imperfect information and shifting requirements. If you like the idea of your antenna design directly enabling a satellite constellation that's changing global internet access, and you're willing to trade some work-life balance for that scope of impact, it's a genuinely compelling place to work.
If you want a slower, more predictable pace with clearly scoped deliverables and less schedule pressure, a traditional defense prime or a smaller, calmer RF component company is likely to be a better long-term fit.
